A Royal Reshuffle: Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Expanding Portfolio of Titles
Being a member of the British royal family often means juggling a plethora of titles and roles, and Kate Middleton and Prince William are no exception. Recent additions to their already impressive list of titles highlight their growing responsibilities within the monarchy.
Kate Middleton, who officially became the Princess of Wales upon King Charles III’s ascent to the throne, has taken on several new military appointments. She now holds the prestigious positions of Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm, Colonel-in-Chief of the 1st Queen’s Dragoon Guards, and Royal Honorary Air Commodore of Royal Air Force Coningsby. Meanwhile, Prince William has also expanded his military portfolio.
He is now Colonel-in-Chief of The Mercian Regiment, Colonel-in-Chief of The Army Air Corps, and Royal Honorary Air Commodore of Royal Air Force Valley, where he previously served as a search and rescue pilot for three years. These appointments underscore his commitment to the armed forces and his dedication to upholding their traditions and values.
The evolution of Kate and William’s titles is not a recent development. Last year, following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing and Charles’s accession to the throne, the couple experienced a formal title upgrade. They transitioned from being the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to the Prince and Princess of Wales, positions traditionally reserved for the heir apparent and their spouse.
The duo also holds a range of Scottish titles, reflecting their importance in Scotland. They are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, in addition to being the Earl and Countess of Carrick, Baron and Baroness of Renfrew, and Lord and Lady of the Isles. Prince William, as the heir apparent, has the additional title of Prince and Great Steward of Scotland.
In Northern Ireland, they carry the titles of Baron and Baroness Carrickfergus, bestowed upon them by Queen Elizabeth upon their marriage.
The couple’s portfolio extends to other roles and honors as well. Kate Middleton is the Colonel of the Irish Guards, a position formerly held by Prince William. Prince William, on the other hand, inherited the title of Colonel of the Welsh Guards from King Charles.
